Do US-Iran talks present a golden opportunity for Turkey?

The newly launched talks between the United States and Iran could bring significant economic and political opportunities for Turkey. Experts emphasize that Ankara should follow these developments closely and act quickly if an agreement is reached.

According to a special analysis by Oguz Akar, the director of Persian news for Anadolu Agency, nuclear talks between Iran and the United States resumed in Oman. This comes at a time when the Trump administration was expected to continue its policy of maximum pressure on Iran, rather than start negotiations.

🟡 A look at the context of the talks

The nuclear agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was concluded in 2015 between Iran and the P5+1 countries, temporarily eased sanctions; however, the unilateral withdrawal of the United States from the agreement during the Trump presidency has once again isolated Iran’s economy internationally.

Now, Iran’s economic infrastructure—from oil and gas to transportation, energy, and banking—is severely depleted and in urgent need of investment and reconstruction. The collapse of Iran’s national currency and domestic financial crises have also added to the pressure.

🟡 Trump’s real goals in the talks

This time, Trump has appointed a businessman named Steve Whittaker to negotiate with Iran instead of traditional diplomats. This move reflects the US economic and trade approach to these negotiations. According to analysts, the main US goal is direct access to the huge economic opportunities in Iran’s 90 million-person market, provided that Iran halts its nuclear program.

🟡 Strategic opportunities for Turkey

If an agreement is reached, Iran will need extensive investments in the fields of oil and gas, industry, transportation, technology, banking, and new energy.

Turkey, with its successful history in the construction, automotive, tourism, machinery and foreign trade industries, has a high capacity to play a role in rebuilding Iran’s economy. In addition, cultural proximity, a common language among a portion of the Iranian population, and long experience in trading with Tehran add to Turkey’s advantage.

Experts believe that the United States will inevitably need Turkish expertise and business networks to exploit the Iranian market, as the United States has not had direct trade relations with Iran in the past decades.

🟡 Conclusion

The new negotiations between the United States and Iran could create a historic opportunity for Turkey. Ankara should follow this process with high sensitivity, prepare for economic cooperation and, if an agreement is reached, act quickly to exploit the exceptional opportunities in the large and needy Iranian market. /anadolu agency
